Will This Task Propel You Towards Your Goal?
Jan 18, 2024In the movie "Shrek," the creators made a strategic decision to abstain from animating the background of the film. Many within the industry believed this was a risky move that could impact their box office performance, but contrary to expectations, it turned out to be a success.
When the director was questioned about this choice, he outlined two key reasons:
- It saved us millions of dollars in costs.
Since nobody pays attention to the background, we believed our audience wouldn't mind.
His foresight proved accurate, and Shrek became a blockbuster.
- In business, it's crucial to discern which tasks contribute to your goals and which do not.
My mentor, Jim Rohn, often said, "A lot of people don't do well because they major in minor things."
It's true-20% of what you do will likely generate 80% of your success.
Here's a simple tool to assist you:
After compiling a list of your objectives, go through and:
- Place a tick next to tasks that propel you toward your goals.
- Place a cross next to tasks that do not.
Challenge yourself to evaluate whether tasks marked with a cross truly need to be done.
This can be challenging, especially for perfectionists, but letting go (or postponing) certain tasks can free up valuable time, allowing you to focus on high-priority activities that drive you and your business forward.
