Is Your Dream Team Right in Front of You?

Sep 19, 2024

If you already have your ‘dream team’, you will know that it doesn’t often happen overnight – most likely, it evolves over time.

I recently conducted a coaching call with a Platinum Mastermind member who aims to transition into performing CEO tasks by the end of the year without continuing to be caught up in daily operations.

During a period of recent illness, her absence highlighted the support her current operations manager needs to successfully execute the responsibilities in their role.

If you want to dive deeper into this topic, check out our blog on the 11 Key Behaviours to facilitate building trust in a team.

Wisely, she plans to complete personality profiling for her team and herself to help enhance communication within the team, increase understanding of what makes other people tick, and help align tasks with the right individuals – ultimately helping her to delegate the tasks she wants to step away from to team members who are better suited, or to guide future recruitment.

Although her current Operations Manager may not be the perfect match for every aspect of the role, there may be someone else in her team who can perform those tasks, or it may require future recruitment.

Understanding each team member’s ‘genius zone’ allows you to delegate tasks and responsibilities that suit their personality type, their natural abilities, skills and interests. The goal is to have a team who love what they do.

Building your dream team involves time, patience, encouragement, open communication, vulnerability and training.

What won't improve your team is becoming frustrated about their shortcomings. Instead, focus on leveraging the team’s current strengths and supporting them to grow in areas needing improvement or delegating them to a more suitable team member.

Reflect on your role. What tasks would you like to stop doing? Who else could do it now or with some training?

When we are clear on what we want from each team member and we have communicated that clearly to each of them, we can work as a team to continuously improve.

The team that you want may include some new members, but it also might be right in front of you with a little listening, nurturing, and training.
